Thai government looks to develop IoT initiatives including a smart city project in Phuket.
SK Telecom signed a contract with Thai state-run telecommunication operator CAT Telecom for the deployment of internet of things networks and technology consulting.
Under terms of the deal SK Telecom and CAT plan to deploy low power wide area-based IoT networks in central areas of Bangkok and Phuket Province in April. In Phuket, SK Telecom and CAT Telecom plan to first launch LoRa-based vehicle location tracking service, and roll out additional IoT services including smart metering and smart street lighting. Thai authorities are currently focusing on Phuket as its first smart city project, the Korean telco said.
The two firms also plan to roll out LoRaWAN in central areas of Bangkok including the Grand Palace, and offer an IoT-based location tracking service for tourists.
“Going forward, SK Telecom will collaborate with CAT Telecom in more areas to create more success stories in Thailand and other Southeast Asian markets,” said Cha In-hyok, EVP and head of SK Telecom’s IoT Business Division.
Chigo offers intelligent cloud-based air conditioners through Ayla Networks’ IoT platform
In other APAC news, Chinese air conditioners manufacturer Chigo selected U.S. firm Ayla Networks to provide intelligent cloud-based air conditioners.

Chigo is also taking advantage of Ayla’s global operations with IoT clouds in North America, Europe and China to expand beyond its base in China to heating, ventilation and air conditioning markets overseas.
