Driving adoption and ROI for the Internet of Things
In the coming years, billions of cellular-connected devices ranging from learning thermostats and wireless security cameras to in-vehicle infotainment units and diagnostic sensors will join the booming Internet of Things. And, with standardization tracking for 2019 or 2020, 5G mobile networks are poised to serve as the ultimate IoT platform, enabling futuristic use cases like remote industrial control and fully-autonomous vehicles.
As this new smart world takes shape, there are a number of interconnected factors to consider. As a myriad of IoT devices are brought online by enterprises and consumers, cross-industry cooperation will help ensure long-term interoperability. IoT will fundamentally change how we live and work by creating insightful data, but, to do that, networks need to seamlessly transport data from a wide-range of sources to cloud management platforms so end users can fully realize the benefit. And, as recent DDoS attacks have reiterated, each new web-enabled device represents a new point of vulnerability, putting IoT security at the top of the list of challenges that need to be addressed.
As IoT ushers in digital transformation, Ron Malenfant, lead solutions architect, Global Service Provider IoT, Cisco, discussed how the global networking and IT company is approaching the space. “It’s really all about digitization. Our customers really have to move forward and digitize their assets– connecting those physical devices to the digital infrastructure.”
He gave the example of how the Cisco Jasper IoT connectivity management platform is being used by AT&T and automobile manufacturers like GM. “There are about 8 million connected vehicles in the U.S. on the AT&T network that are all powered and enabled by the Cisco Jasper Control Center. One of the things it does is it takes away the complication…and allows this whole other set of services for you as the user and also for the car manufacturers. Now that vehicle becomes a platform to enable a whole other set of services–infotainment, service, fleet management– once you get the device connected.”
