Name checking AT&T, T-Mobile said it will offer postpaid customers free high-speed data and calls in Brazil throughout Summer Olympics

T-Mobile US is jumping on the Summer Olympics hype wagon with an offer of free high-speed data, calls from Brazil back to the U.S. and text messaging for its postpaid customers.
The offer is set to begin Aug. 1 and run through the month. The Summer Olympics are set to run Aug. 5-21, centered in Rio de Janeiro.
The deal builds on the carrier’s already offered international roaming service, which includes free access to unlimited low-speed data and text messaging, with voice calls billed at 20 cents per minute and the option for customers to purchase buckets of high-speed data for customers traveling to more than 140 countries.
T-Mobile US also notes the Olympic-specific offer is its answer to a promotion launched last month by event sponsor AT&T, which includes 1 gigabyte of cellular data, access to more than 1,000 Wi-Fi hot spots in Brazil, 30 minutes of voice calling and unlimited text messaging for $50 per month.
“AT&T is spending millions to put their logo all over the games as the official sponsor. They introduced a new ‘Brazil plan’ last month, so their customers can foot the bill for AT&T’s VIP parties and private suites in Rio,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile US, in a statement. “That couldn’t be more different from the Un-carrier. T-Mobile is freeing customers to travel to the Rio Games and use their phones without worry.”

Free service, phone, camera for athletes’ families

In a move specifically targeting Olympic athletes, T-Mobile US said it is offering free service running across a free Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge device and a free Gear 360 camera for athletes and their families through October. The offer is limited to two phones per family.
