AT&T GoPhone prepaid service bolstered in battle against Verizon, T-Mobile

AT&T GoPhone prepaid customers are set to receive an extra 1 GB of LTE data to better position rate plans against offerings from Verizon and T-Mobile

The carrier prepaid battles continue this week as AT&T Mobility bolstered the unthrottled data allotment for select GoPhone rate plans.
AT&T Mobility said beginning May 27, GoPhone customers on existing $45 and $60 plans will gain an extra gigabyte of LTE data access, pushing the $45 plan to 3 GB and the $60 plan to 6 GB per month. The plans continue to offer the ability to rollover unused data for one month, while the $60 plan allows for access to its data allotment when traveling in Canada and Mexico. The basic $30 per month GoPhone plan remains unchanged.
All of the GoPhone plans provide for unlimited voice calling and text messaging within the U.S. and to Canada and Mexico; while the $45 and $60 per month plans offer a $5 per month credit for customers signing up for an automatic payment service.
AT&T reported robust prepaid customer growth during the first quarter of the year, which included 500,000 direct net additions through its Cricket Wireless and GoPhone platforms. The GoPhone service earlier this year received the option of unlimited calls to landline phones in the Dominican Republic and 10 cents per minute for calls to mobile devices for a $5 per month fee on top of the $45 and $60 per month plans.
More significantly, the latest GoPhone update looks to counter recent moves from rivals Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile US.
Verizon Wireless earlier this month made permanent an offer of three prepaid pricing tiers at $30, $45 and $60 per month. The entry level plan will include unlimited domestic calling, unlimited text messaging across North America and a reliance on Wi-Fi for data. The $45 per month plan throws in 3 GB of cellular data for customers signing up for an Auto Pay service, or 2 GB without; while the $60 per month plan bumps the data up to 6 GB with Auto Pay, 5 GB without, and throws in unlimited calling from the U.S. to Mexico and Canada.
T-Mobile US late last month unveiled a new multiline promotion for its MetroPCS brand targeting customers porting their lines in from a rival carrier. The limited-time offer promises unlimited domestic voice calling, text messaging and 6 GB of unthrottled LTE data per line for $30 per month for up to five lines of service. To receive the 6 GB of data, customers need to port their number in from another wireless carrier, otherwise they are only offered 3 GB of unthrottled LTE data for the $30 per month price.
