Orange, Ericsson, Sequans, LoRa and publicly traded Silver Spring Networks launch of Starfish makes waves in the “Internet of Things” space this week on IoT Innovation, sponsored by Anritsu and Telecomcareers.

IoT Security – Do we really understand how vulnerable IoT is to hackers?

Watch Rupert Baines, CEO of UltraSoc, as he discusses keynote presentations from the IoT Security Conference held last week in London, where the man who hacked Tesla talks about what he was and was not able to do once inside the Tesla system.

IoT Industry updates – Wireless wars erupt

IoT LTE, GSM and unlicensed network connectivity all made advancements over the past couple of weeks with France-based Orange launching its LoRa IoT test concurrent with LTE and GSM trials; and publicly traded Silver Springs Networks launched an international wireless IPv6 network service for IoT.

The Wall Street Journal announced a wireless war erupted this week when Starfish was announced.  Dan Shey, an analyst at ABI Research, was quoted as saying, “It has caused the operators to wake up.”

Ericsson and single mode chipmaker Sequans were part of the Orange IoT LTE GSM announcement aiming to demonstrate extended in-building wireless coverage designed to increase device reachability sevenfold, while reducing device cost by 60% and extend battery life for up to 10 years. Check out this video interview with David Hammerwall, strategic product manager in Ericsson’s Radio Group, who shares his insights with RCR Wireless News’Jeff Mucci about Orange and Ericsson’s launch of the world’s first IoT over GSM and LTE field trial. The trial, which will be conducted in France, uses the 900 MHz spectrum band.

IoT Development Toolkits – Where does industry start the digital transformation process?

It seems everyone has an IoT development toolkit. The question is which one should the telecom industry use to jumpstart its IoT digital transformation? Examples of recently announced IoT development toolkits include:

  • Imagination Technologies leveraged Kickstarter crowdfunding to launch Creator Ci40 IoT Dev Kit with the goal of reaching the do-it-yourself maker community as well as academia and enterprise software developers. For a Kickstarter donation, you can order your own Ci40 tool kit. Watch Mucci’s video interview with Paul Evans, director of business development for IMG Systems, a division of Imagination Technologies.
  • Raspberry Pi Zero, a computer priced at $5, sold out immediately after being launched. This followed news that Microsoft had replaced Intel’s Galileo with Raspberry Pi as its official IoT Microsoft 10 IoT developer toolkit. IBM also offers IoT interoperability with Raspberry Pi.
  • Orange, as part of a series of IoT announcements, released its own version of an IoT developer toolkit for start-ups and connected objects designers to create LoRa technology-based services.
  • Earlier this month, Verizon Wireless expanded its IoT development platform called Thingspace, to include the availability of a Cat 1 LTE network features for IoT coupled with additional application program interfaces and application enablement platforms and data visualization tools. The new tools are designed to enable developers to connect their devices to the Internet, publish the data and create real-time interactive dashboards and control panels visualizing that device data.
