Tecore Networks brings core capabilities to the edge of the network

4G LTE, VoLTE, and virtualized networks are on the roadmaps of rural and non-traditional network operators thanks to Tecore Networks’ Core on the Edge solutions. The company’s Network-in-a-Box  provides complete LTE network service for remote locations, including rural settings, disaster sites, oil rig platforms, and mining sites.

“It’s a strategy of decentralizing the core network capability and delivering a complete solution out to the edge. The result is an optimized, more cost effective package that fits the requirements of rural and niche market operators,” said Casey Joseph, Executive Vice President at Tecore.

Tecore’s technology is built on the patented iCore software defined core network.   The iCore has evolved across wireless generations and technologies, and today provides industry compliant 4G LTE core network capabilities. The iCore is combined with Tecore’s CoreCell  base station to deliver the complete Network-in-a-Box solution. Whether integrated within a large operator’s network or providing a remote private LTE network, the Network in A Box delivers performance at the edge of the network.

Able to be installed in as little as four rack units of space, the Network-in-a-Box supports 4G LTE macro service and can optionally provide multi-technology support for 3G HSPA as well as 2G technologies such as GSM and CDMA. By delivering multiple access technologies and streamlining the network through an IP-based architecture, the solution offers a compact and cost-effective way for operators to deploy and extend their networks.

Software is the key
In addition to standard LTE connectivity; the software defined architecture of the platform also enables Tecore to bring VoLTE to smaller service providers who want to keep pace with the service offerings of larger operators. VoLTE can be incorporated locally as a software element inside the iCore software defined core network. Software at the network edge increases flexibility so that the Tecore solution can interact seamlessly with a Telco cloud, and can operate more independently when necessary. This makes the network less vulnerable to service disruption.

“By locating the core capability at the edge, our solutions are able to continue service in remote and isolated areas when the connection to the cloud goes down,” said Joseph. “In addition to increased service reliability, the localized core network capability optimizes the use of satellite resources by handling transactions locally thereby reducing the OPEX in the network.”

Core on the edge is also applicable to disaster recovery situations. If severe weather takes out the commercial network, Tecore’s Network-in-a-Box can be deployed within hours to restore connectivity.

As WiFi integration and LTE in unlicensed bands continue to take hold in the market, the Tecore solution architecture is ideally positioned to enable the next generation of wireless deployments for non-traditional networks. “LTE unlicensed is opening up new opportunities specifically for the type of architecture we have to enable localized LTE broadband capability on an oil rig out in the Gulf, or in a remote mining location,” said Joseph.

Tecore Networks is a global supplier of multi-technology 2G, 3G and 4G mobile network infrastructure. Built with the same standards-based voice and data technologies available to global carriers on an IP-based architecture, Tecore has dramatically enhanced functionality while minimizing space requirements, installation time and the cost of ownership.
