Intel inside more gateways?
Intel wants to be inside more than just your personal computer – the chip giant is buying Germany’s Lantiq, a provider of chips for telecom residential gateways and broadband access equipment, for an undisclosed amount.
“By 2018, we expect more than 800 million broadband-connected households worldwide,” said Kirk Skaugen, SVP and GM of Intel’s client computing group. “The combination of our cable gateway business with Lantiq’s technology and talent can allow global service providers to introduce new home-computing experiences.”
Intel is getting more than 2,000 broadband-related patents as part of this acquisition. Lantiq also offers technologies that use G.Fast, the recently approved standard for bringing higher speeds to cable, creating a potential alternative to fiber-to-the-home. G.Fast won a significant endorsement from BT last week.
Lantiq said its digital subscriber line solutions have been deployed by more than 100 operators worldwide. The company is based in Munich, Germany, but its principal investor is San Francisco’s Golden Gate Capital.
Double the data: Verizon Wireless’ Super Bowl stats
More than half the fans who attended the Super Bowl carried Verizon Wireless smartphones, according to the company, and it looks like the mobile networks kept pace with the action. Verizon Wireless said its network handled more than 25 million wireless connections – nearly 25,000 per minute.
The amount of data uploaded by Verizon Wireless customers was more than twice last year’s level, with users tweeting, texting and posting 4.1 terabytes worth of data, compared to 1.9 terabytes last year. Of course much of that data usage happened on the heels of the biggest plays.
