LTE NA 2014: JDSU on hetnets, VoLTE

Paul Gowans, mobile strategy director for JDSU, talked with RCR Wireless’ Kelly Hill about key takeaways from his session as part of the hetnet track at the LTE North America conference, as well as the status of Voice over LTE deployments.

“I think we’re moving from kind of femtocells inside, now into kind of metro/small cells: How does it provides capacity? I mean that’s the key thing now,” Gowans said.

Locating small cells is key to the equation, he said, adding that many small cells end up going in the wrong places.

“At the end of the day, you’ve got a certain amount of spectrum, the closer you get that cell to a user, the better service they’ll get,” Gowans said.

Small cells were widely discussed at the show this week, from their potential to the challenges associated with deploying them in a cost-effective way.

Gowans also addressed what JDSU is seeing in terms of VoLTE deployments and supporting handset testing in order to get Radio Access Network data and a better end-to-end view of VoLTE in the network. He noted that the end-to-end view isn’t just focused on VoLTE, but for a better overall view of the network as operators build on their VoLTE deployments with additional services.
