Telefónica telco cloud expands with Equinix Cloud Exchange

Telefónica telco cloud has expanded through a partnership with Equinix to connect multiple cloud service providers through the Equinix Cloud Exchange. The partnership is designed to allow direct access to multiple cloud networks across Europe, Asia and North America. Telefónica said the partnership will be valuable to businesses  moving toward external data centers and cloud service providers to streamline production and cut costs.

 

Vodafone denies ties to Edward Snowden surveillance scandal

Vodafone is under fire after a U.K. news report revealed the carrier played a significant role in creating the surveillance system exposed by Edward Snowden. The report indicates that Vodafone bought the firm in question in July 2012. The firm was part of a program called Mastering the Internet, which helped British spies gather and store data from Internet traffic. Vodafone has denied the accusations claiming that GCHQ was never given direct access to its network.

 

China Mobile promotes 5G at Informa’s LTE North America event

China Mobile attended the LTE North America show in Dallas this week. Dr. Chih-Lin I, chief scientist of wireless technologies for the China Mobile Research Institute, discussed the research and development that is going into “5G.” She described a network that will combine new spectrum, the continuing evolution of 4G and Wi-Fi infrastructure.

MTN introduces Ericsson Converged Wallet platform to 7M users

MTN Uganda has teamed up with Ericsson to launch Ericsson’s Converged Wallet platform. The partnership is designed to allow MTN Uganda to introduce new financial services for its 7 million mobile wallet users and 50,000 agents. MTN Uganda is part of the MTN Group, which has more than 200 million subscribers across Africa and the Middle East.

Etisalat deploying 5G

Etisalat announced plans to be among the first operators to deploy 5G. Speaking at the Abu Dhabi Media Summit, Etisalat Group Chief Executive Ahmad Julfar announced plans to roll out 5G technology in the coming years. Etisalat has an estimated 180 million customers across 19 countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The operator currently ranks No. 12 in the world in terms of its customer base.
