Ericsson on 'mediacoms' vs. telecoms

Ulf Ewaldsson, SVP and CTO at Ericsson, talked with RCR Wireless News about the distinction between “mediacoms” and telecoms.
Ewaldsson notes that media was one of the first verticals to be digitized, and as a result it has changed radically in the past decade or more – ultimately leading to the current explosion of data use, with video accounting for more than 40% of all mobile traffic.
“There is tremendous new competition going on between operators to get more and more active in media,” Ewaldsson said.
Ericsson has been expanding its video delivery capabilities, most recently with the acquisition of video optimization company Azuki Systems earlier this year. Ericsson is five years into a 10-year program to reshape its position in the telecom industry.
