Rackspace (NYSE: RAX), listed as one of Forbes’ Top 25 Fastest Growing Tech companies and one of Money Magazine’s 100 Best companies to work for, is exploding like wildfire in the cloud-sharing workforce landscape.

“Rackers” in high demand

Employees at Rackspace are known as “rackers” within company walls. Nearly 80% work in the United States, with offices in Illinois, Virginia, Texas and California.

The company’s website lists 178 open positions needing immediate filling, with 55% Ā stationed at its corporate headquarters in San Antonio. Software developers take the lead as most of the hiring is in that area.

Other careers in high demand include the POSIX – compliant computer software program Linux employees with varying degrees of embedded specialities. These openings account for 43% of jobs available.

Word on the street

The IT hosting company specifically caters to customers in need of a solution for moving data to the cloud.

Glassdoor notes that over 80% of people recommend this company to others, with an almost four-star rating.

So, what makes this company so attractive to employees?

One thought is the unconventional attitude and work space the company provides to their employees.

Rackspace Chairman and Co-founder Graham Weston came up with the idea to rehabĀ a formerĀ dilapidated mall in San AntonioĀ and turn it into the bustling epicenter of the company. Now the building is affectionately known as “The castle.”

“I thought this was going to be awesome. But, everyone else thought I was crazy,” Weston stated. Many of his current employees had their first professional experience working as a retail associate in the very same mall.

No stopping now

Currently, Rackspace has nine data centers around the world, including in Texas and Australia; over 5,000 employees; and services hundreds of thousands of people across the world. The demand is not expected to subside.

In 2010, Rackspace helped found OpenStack, the open-source operating system for both private and public clouds. According to eweek.com, OpenStack now has the support of many of the world’s leading IT vendors and is a key technology option around the world.
