Showing us the money in M2M: A conversation with Steve Brumer

“M2M is a worldwide opportunity.” So says Steve Brumer, partner at 151 Advisors during his interview with Limor Schafman of the U2U Connect show on RCRTV.

Brumer goes on to provide an in-depth look at how companies need to remove blinders, think creatively about the global opportunities offered by the growth of machine-to-machine and then bring the financial strategy into the mix. In his view, it is keeping an eye on how to build a sustainable business that leads companies to truly solve the product development, manufacturing, shipping, marketing, distribution and channel management questions that they need to resolve in order to be successful.

Brumer offers an analysis of different segments of the M2M ecosystem a company can pursue, and suggests that companies be very clear about what role they want to play. From that position, the rest of the strategy regarding product and service development and who to partner with in the ecosystem, becomes clearer.

Areas in which Brumer sees a lot of growth include telematics, hardware development, software applications (mobile), e-health, wearable technoloty, home connectivity, commercial building controls, farming, oil, natural gas, government and defense … clearly M2M is permeating all layers of industry.

On the global stage, countries such as Africa and parts of Asia which have not had infrastructure are seeing breakthroughs with true innovation because they do not have legacy technology to hold them back and the needs are great. Singapore and Malaysia have smaller companies doing creative work which needs to find markets in the United States and internationally. Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Europe – truly no part of the world is untouched by the opportunity Brumer sees growing.
