Analysts are predicting that Samsung again dominated the smartphone market in the second quarter. During the first quarter, the company surged ahead of Apple in the smartphone race and overtook Nokia to become the world’s largest seller of all types of mobile phones. Now, analysts polled by Reuters are saying that Samsung probably did even better in the second quarter.
If the poll is predictive, Samsung shipped about 50 million smartphones last quarter. That’s a record high, and 64% higher than Apple’s estimated second quarter shipments of 30.5 million. Of course, Samsung benefitted from the launch of its new Galaxy S III last quarter, and should continue to do so in the third quarter. Apple, on the other hand, has not introduced a new iPhone for more than 9 months. The iPhone 5 is expected this year, and should boost Apple’s smartphone sales.
Still, Apple will probably never have the depth or breadth of smartphone offerings that Samsung has. The South Korean conglomerate that sells everything from cameras to vacuum cleaners has blanketed the smartphone market with products of varying sizes, prices and capabilities. Verizon Wireless is currently offering 5 Samsung smartphones and AT&T is offering nine.
