Colombia’s government has unveiled its telephone number portability results. During the first three months of this year, 167,914 mobile users kept their original phone numbers when they switched to a new telephone operator. From August 2011 to March 2012, a total of approximately 300,000 lines were switched this way, exceeding the Commission for Communications Regulation (CRC) predictions.
Comcel, an América Móvil carrier which is the largest operator in the country, received the majority of new entrants, while Movistar lost the most users.
According to the executive director of the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC), Carlos Andrés Rebellón Villán, the increased use of mobile number portability in the first three months of 2012 exceeded the total number of users who switched during the first five months after the law was enacted in 2011.
Mobile number portability has been available in Colombia since July 29, 2011. Number portability was made possible by a law passed in 2009 and a resolution adopted in 2010. Number portability in Colombia may reach a total of 50 million subscribers.
