Embratel unveils OTN backbone to meet enterprise demand

Brazil’s Embratel, which belongs to América Móvil, unveiled a new backbone network based on optical transport network technology and targeting its enterprise costumers.

“The new network will serve large companies, corporate clients and government,” noted Ney Acyr, Embratel Empresas’ executive director, to RCR Wireless News. “Enterprises, such as data center and those organizations that use cloud services, which require high capacity and connection quality will benefit directly from new backbone.”

Embratel did not disclose its investment in the project, but said the building and launch of its new backbone comprised America Movil’s investments in Latin America, an amount, according to Acyr, of $35 billion.

The new network has an initial capacity of 3.6 terabits per second, and can reach up to 120 terabits per second. “This is up to 100-times higher than that of other networks used by the market,” the company explained. “The new photonic network will provide customers with high-capacity, double fault protection and intelligence to restore applications.”

According to Embratel the new backbone is already prepared to support corporate demand for cloud services.

The new infrastructure will initially serve major cities in the southeast, south and midwest of Brazil. Expansion into the northeast and north is scheduled for the second half of this year.
