4G World 2011: Survey shows world is 4G’s oyster

In connection with this week’s 4G World event, Yankee Group released a report highlighting the exploding demand for mobile data services and how “4G” technologies will play in the space.

The report noted that between 2010 and 2015, the firm expects the global base of smartphones to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 33%, which will pale in comparison to the 81% forecast for the tablet market. Tablets will be working from a smaller installed base, but that expected growth will put a strain on those capable of accessing cellular networks.

Those devices expected to access either LTE or WiMAX networks is also expected to climb from 31 million at the end of this year to 675 million by the end of 2015.

The survey also found that 40% of smartphone users in the United States, United Kingdom and France currently watch video at least once per week on their mobile device; more than 40% of Europeans rank mobile Internet access as one of the top three features in selecting a new mobile device; and 44% of consumers have either never heard the term “4G” or have any idea what it means.
