Alcatel-Lucent and Chunghwa Telecom to bring faster, better connectivity to mobile broadband in Taiwan

Alcatel-Lucent | August 31, 2011 | Press Release

Paris, August 31, 2011 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has been selected by Chunghwa Telecom, the largest telecommunications operator in Taiwan, to upgrade its network to address Taiwan’s exploding demand for high-bandwidth advanced mobile services.

Currently, Chunghwa Telecom’s transport network for mobile data is based on the SDH standard, which was designed primarily to transmit voice calls. Alcatel-Lucent’s Packet Transport Network solution will upgrade this by increasing mobile bandwidth and by providing the greater bandwidth and flexibility required for advanced mobile data services. Alcatel-Lucent will ensure that Chunghwa Telecom maintains its high levels of network performance, availability and efficiency during the transition.

Once completed, the upgraded network will have increased performance, and will have the flexibility to support current and future mobile applications, as well as the ability to balance demand and network load intelligently. It will not only manage the next-generation network through the existing management system but also provide high end-to-end stability and manageability of the next-generation network.

Ken Wu, President & Managing Director of Alcatel-Lucent Taiwan, said: “Smart phones, tablets and other Internet-connected mobile devices have caused a huge increase in mobile data traffic in Taiwan. We have been working closely with Chunghwa Telecom to build an efficient packet transport network which can match that growing demand efficiently. This is a great opportunity for us to increase our involvement with optical networking in Taiwan, and to demonstrate our ability to support a seamless network transition, without disruption to our customer, or their customers.”

Chunghwa Telecom stated: “Deploying high speed packet access technology for mobile broadband is a key strategic focus for Chunghwa Telecom. This involves a substantial expansion of base stations and WiFi access points to support our mobile data subscribers. Alcatel-Lucent has a deep understanding of our network and, as a leader in optics with unmatched knowledge and experience of network transformation, we are glad to have them as a partner as we work to deliver a new generation of services and experiences to our customers.”

The solution based around the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch will immediately improve performance, but also lays the groundwork for the future evolution of Chunghwa Telecom’s mobile network. There is a clear path to evolve service to a network entirely based on Internet Protocol (IP) transmission. This will support 2G and 3G wireless networks, and the eventual move to high-speed 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE). Alcatel-Lucent and Chunghwa Telecom have already conducted a successful 4G LTE field trial.
