Mobile operators are facing a seven-fold increase in data delivery costs over the next five years, according to a new report from Juniper Research. Global mobile network operator data delivery costs are expected to surpass $370 billion annually by 2016.
Carriers can reduce some of those costs by improving base stations and deploying offload solutions, but even with more carriers adopting LTE networks, data delivery costs are jumping sky high. Operators collectively paid $53 million for mobile data delivery worldwide in 2010.
“The case for reducing network inefficiency is both environmental and economic. By implementing solutions designed to reduce energy wastage, not only will MNOs markedly cut their operating costs but they will following sustainable business practices which reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” wrote the report’s author Windsor Holden.
