Number portability starts today in Colombia

Colombian mobile users can switch operators and keep their existing numbers beginning today (July 29). The number portabilitywas possible by a law passed in 2009 and a resolution adopted in 2010. Number portability in Colombia may reach 50 million subscribers. The user only needs to identify that he or she owns the line and not have a negative balance on the account.Comcel, an América Móvil carrier, is the largest operator in the country, with market share of 66.2%. Movistar (Telefónica) has almost 22%, followed by Tigo with 11.82%.

The Commission for Communications Regulation (CRC) is responsible for regulating and promoting the rule, while Ministerio de TIC y la Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio (ICT Ministry and the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce), is the agency responsible for monitoring compliance of the standard.
