Rumor: Sony to buy Nokia and incorporate into Aiwa brand?

Here at RCR Wireless we often find ourselves listening in on some especially interesting rumors and saucy speculation. While we can’t absolutely vouch for their accuracy, some are still interesting enough to explore in terms of possibility, and the following is one that meets that mark.

While discussing Nokia’s prospects with a highly placed executive of a billing company with offices in Finland, it was brought to RCR’s attention that Microsoft may have some competition if and when it comes to make a bid for the embattled mobile maker. Japanese consumer electronics maker Sony is rumored to be mulling a pass at Finland’s finest, after an earlier bid from subsidiary division Aiwa several years ago failed.

“The first bid was met with consternation from Nokia’s board, but now they’re taking another look at their situation,” our source told us.

Aiwa has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony since 2002, and is mainly considered to be a now defunct brand, but with Nokia’s handset division purportedly open to bidders, our source believes Sony could revive it to incorporate the Finnish handset maker.

Sony, we’re told, has the cash to make such a purchase, but whether or not it has enough to compete with the likes of Microsoft – which recently payed a cool 8.5 billion dollars for Skype – is very much in question.

Again, we have no way of verifying if there are any truth to the rumors, but it certainly seems to be a topic of conversation amongst Finns, and thus is worth keeping an eye on.
