Barnes & Noble launches SDK for NOOK Color

Barnes & Noble Inc. (BKS) has released a software development kit that gives developers an opportunity to build apps for the NOOK Color. The e-reader tablet is due for a firmware update this spring that will give users the ability to download third-party apps and enjoy more of Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android experience. The firmware update will not only bring apps, but also email and other core Android features to the device.
Developers can register to become a NOOK app developer now and get an early start toward qualifying their apps for the first batch that will be made available to users following the OS update. Upon certification, developers will gain access to development resources, including “developer mode,” app signing tools, private forums and other support resources. Developers will also be able to submit their app for distribution on Barnes & Noble’s storefront.
