Telmex wins Nextel auction for wireless broadband

(Reuters) – Telmex, the telecommunications giant controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, said it won a contract to provide the platform for wireless carrier Nextel’s mobile broadband services.

Telmex, which controls 80 percent of Mexico’s fixed phone lines, did not reveal the financial terms of the deal in a statement on Thursday.

The announcement comes as Mexico’s largest broadcaster Televisa said it was moving into the wireless market, dominated by Slim, with a $1.6 billion deal to buy half of cell phone company Iusacell.
