KUALA LUMPUR: Celcom Axiata Bhd will invest about RM1bil this year in capital expenditure (capex) to upgrade its network to be long-term evolution (LTE) ready.

Chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly said that for the next three years, Celcom had allocated some RM3bil for capex, of which RM700mil to RM800mil would be used to upgrade it network coverage, capacity and quality.

Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, he said 60% of the RM1bil would be used to enhance its data network while 40% would be used to maintain its current network.

The network modernisation will eventually move Celcom towards an all-Internet protocol (IP) infrastructure, migrating its sites to a single-RAN (radio access network) architecture and be ready to deploy future LTE services.

LTE is the project name of a new high-performance air interface for cellular mobile communication systems. It is the last step toward the 4th generation (4G) of radio technologies designed to increase the capacity and speed of mobile telephone networks.

Previous news reports said that Maxis Bhd and Celcom were undertaking trials to test the new 4G LTE technology.

Maxis is working with Huawei while Celcom has teamed up with Huawei and Ericsson for the trials.

Shazalli said the company was conducting trials for LTE in Perak and Negri Sembilan.
