Chunghwa Telecom and Alcatel-Lucent to deploy Taiwan’s first GPON network

Paris, February 24, 2011－Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has engaged in a optic-fiber network project with Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest telecommunications provider,to build the country’s first gigabit passive optical network (GPON). The fiber-based infrastructure will enable Chunghwa Telecom to provide state-of-the-art triple-play services to its residential and business customers. Commercial operation of the initial phase of Chunghwa’s GPON network is set to commence by Q3 of 2011.
Chunghwa Telecom said that as they are upgrading their services to create the best user-experience for both enterprise and residential customers, Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON solution has been one of the best choices because of its high efficiency, stability, quality of service and professional services expertise. Alcatel-Lucent’s award-winning solution will help Chunghwa push forward their optic-fiber network initiative and further drive the adoption of fiber-based triple-play services across Taiwan.

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-User (ISAM FTTU)for the delivery of ultra-high-speed services to both residential and business users. The GPON platform will be complemented by the Alcatel-Lucent 5520 Access Management System (AMS) – Alcatel-Lucent’s next-generation element management system that covers the entire ISAM product portfolio, encompassing DSL as well as fiber-based access. Alcatel-Lucent will also provide its professional services expertise – including software integration, as well as network management system installation and commissioning.
