SKT, KT bet that NFC will catch on

SK Telecom announced yesterday that it joined forces with two Japanese wireless operators to conduct a field test today on mobile payment based on near field communication (NFC) technology.

If successful, people in Korea and Japan traveling to each other’s countries will be able to make payments with their NFC technology-embedded handsets.

Under the field test, SKT, KDDI and SoftBank Mobile will explore a variety of mobile payments in the two countries, and seek a common, compatible standard.

“This partnership is very significant for mobile users in Korea and Japan,” said Lee Jin-woo, senior vice president of the SKT’s open collaboration support office. “For the first time, users will experience seamless and convenient NFC-based mobile payment between two countries.”
