Compal Electronics Steps Up Tablet PC Push

Taipei, Jan. 3, 2011 (CENS)–Compal Electronics Inc. will debut its first tablet PC in February 2011, marking the firm`s another impressive effort in tapping the tablet PC market after a slew of investments in the industry.
The company`s president, Ray Chen, forecast tablet PC to be one of the most important electronic products over the next five years. Global market demand for the PCs is estimated at 50 million systems in 2011.
Compal has allied with upstream suppliers of the electronics industry to tap the market. For instance, the firm has set up a joint venture with IC design house Sitronix Technology Corp. to develop power management ICs for touch screens and completed an NT$1.4 billion (US$46 million at US$1:NT$30) takeover of a 4.5-generation color-filter factory from Chunghwa Picture Tube.
Chen said his company`s deployments in the tablet PC industry will expand into screen-production glass and wide-view panel sectors.
