It wasn’t 3D stealing the show at this year’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain, but near field communication (NFC), a technology thought to settle, once and for all, the “mobile wallet” and “mobile payment” discussion.

While Texas Instruments and Qualcomm were busy paper launching dual and quad core processors at this year’s MWC, NVIDIA seemed a step ahead, demoing what looked to be a working model of its upcoming Tegra 3 quad-core mobile processor.

How embarrassing for poor old Microsoft. First they were late to the whole smartphone party, and now Windows Phone 7’s first firmware update since the OS’s launch has obviously gone awry, as users of Samsung’s Omnia 7 have been taking to the internet in droves to complain of apparently bricked devices.

It looks as though all that whining may have finally paid off. In a tweet sent out by the @GoogleNexus twitter account, the big G announced to thunderous applause “Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) update now rolling out to Nexus S and Nexus One.”
