MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS) reported a deal with Boingo Wireless Inc. to pre-install the Boingo Mobile application on select Wi-Fi enabled smart phones. The application will allow users unlimited access Boingo’s more than 200,000 Wi-Fi hot spots worldwide using a single username for $8 per month.
Boingo noted the deal was its first carrier “pre-load deal.” The initial devices to include the application include the LG Electronics Co. Ltd. Optimus M and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.’s Ascend. Both devices run Google Inc.’s Android operating system.
A number of carriers have leveraged Wi-Fi capabilities as a way to offload data traffic from their clogged cellular networks onto localized wireless networks. AT&T Mobility is a prime example as it provides users of Apple Inc.’s iPhone with free access to its Wi-Fi network.
MetroPCS recently launched LTE services in select markets offering higher-speed data services to customers, though the offering is currently limited to the Samsung Telecommunications America Craft feature phone.
