Mobile World Congress, which takes place mid February of every year in Barcelona, is THE event of the mobile and wireless world’s calendar. It is the place to be and be seen, the place where deals are done and startups are pitched over copious amounts of Sangria and bite-sized Tapas.
And best of all, 2011 is the year Google has decided to grace the mobile world with a Barcelona booth of its own, a thumb in the eye to Apple and a huge boon to both developers and the GSMA alike.
Not that Google has never attended the event before, of course, but usually it simply sends a high profile speaker like CEO Eric Schmidt to talk about mobile being a priority, without actually setting up a booth. Not so this year, according to the GSMA.
Schmidt will still be flying in and delivering a heartfelt speech, of course, but conference goers will now also be blessed with four days worth of Google booth brilliance and breakout sessions for eager Android developers.
Google wouldn’t respond to RCR’s request for comment, but we’ll keep you updated with developments as we hear them.
