It’s been a long time coming, but Motorola Inc. (MOT) might finally be returning to its previous graces after a prolonged downward spiral.
Following its first quarter of growth in four years, the handset maker and infrastructure vendor reported (PDF) a net income of $109 million on $5.8 billion in revenues during the third quarter.
Perhaps even more importantly, the company shipped 3.8 million smart phones during the quarter, which marks a 40% increase from the previous quarter.
But overall, Motorola shipped 9.1 million devices during quarter, which is down from the 13.6 million it shipped in the year-ago period. The company has introduced 22 new smart phones this year.
“In the third quarter, Motorola Mobility showed positive momentum across the business, with mobile devices reaching profitability for the first time in over three years,” said Sanjay Jha, Motorola co-CEO and Motorola Mobility CEO.
