In the Android deprived country that is Oz, HTC and Vodafone Hutchinson Australia (VHA) – owner of the carriers Vodafone and 3 Australia – have revealed that the HTC Legend is set to arrive on their networks starting in June.
Up until now there has been a dearth of Android powered handsets for sale in the land down under, with the only carrier subsidized Android devices being the HTC Magic on Vodafone and the Google G1 available through Optus.
Such was the lack of Android phones available for outright purchase – with the HTC Hero and Tattoo only available through national retail chain Harvey Norman – many people were forced to import more current and powerful Android handsets from abroad.
This trend, however, has started to change of late, with Telstra releasing the HTC Desire back in March, Sony Erricsson releasing Xperia X10 in May and Optus offering the Motorola DEXT, Quench and Backflip.
And now Android availability in sun drenched Australia has taken another step forward with VHA announcing it will be bringing the HTC Legend to Vodafone starting June 3rd for free on the $49 a month plan, and for $599 outright through Vodafone itself as well as 3rd party retailers with dates and prices for the Legend on the 3 network to follow.
There is also rumour and speculation that VHA will announce Australian Nexus One exclusively in the coming months.
