AT&T Mobility said it will support Voice over Internet Protocol applications running on Apple Inc.’s iPhone over its 3G network, reversing a previous policy that relegated such applications to a Wi-Fi connection.
AT&T Mobility said it has notified both the Federal Communications Commission and Apple Inc. Of its decision.
“iPhone is an innovative device that dramatically changed the game in wireless when it was introduced just two years ago,” said AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets President and CEO Ralph de la Vega. “Today’s decision was made after evaluating our customers’ expectations and use of the device compared to dozens of others we offer.”
The announcement seems to head off a current issue being investigated by the FCC over Google Inc.’s Google Voice application being denied by either AT&T or Apple.
