Infrastructure awards wrap-up: Nokia Siemens Networks, Alcatel-Lucent, Alvarion and more

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.
Cellular
–Azerbaijan: Nokia Siemens Networks won a contract to expand Bakcell’s GSM network and upgrade it with EDGE technology. Under the contract Nokia Siemens will provide its Flexi EDGE base station platform.
–Italy: Ericsson won a contract with Telecom Italia to deploy a mobile network with MIMO technology that will provide speeds of 28 Mbps. Milan is slated to be the first city to receive the new technology.
WiMAX
–Cambodia: Alcatel-Lucent said it has been chosen by Chuan Wei Co. Ltd. to deploy a nationwide WiMAX Rev-e wireless broadband network.
–Democratic Republic of Congo: Cielux Telecom chose Alvarion to provide a full turnkey WiMAX network that uses Alvarion’s 802.16e BreezeMAX platform for the 3.5 GHz frequency band. Cielux plans to offer voice and broadband data services to residential and business users in Kinshasa and Lubumashi.
Wi-Fi
–Poland: Nicolaus Copemicus University in Torun has chosen Meru Networks to provide a wireless local area network that will give students access to secure wireless Internet access. The university is replacing stand-alone wireless access points on its campus with Meru’s centrally controlled network.
Miscellaneous
–Germany: T-Mobile Germany selected Tekelec to provide its EAGLE 5 core network platform for mobile number portability.
–United States: Baltimore County in Maryland has signed a contract with Motorola Inc. to deploy a countywide interoperable mission critical voice and data communications system. The deal is valued at $45.1 million.
