USA Today launched a free downloadable offering for the iPhone that delivers headlines and news stories, sports information, weather and images.
The offering, which is available through Apple’s App Store for iPhone and iPod Touch users, also features support for mobile advertising features such as click-to-call, click-to-maps and video. The application, which was developed in cooperation with Mercury Intermedia of Tennessee, uses GPS information to deliver local weather conditions navigational information.
While many traditional print publications have expanded into mobile, USA Today has been especially aggressive in targeting consumers on their phones. The media outlet offered a downloadable app centered on content surrounding the recent presidential election, and last year parent company Gannett Co. Inc. invested $10 million with 4INFO, which powers an ad-funded, text-news alert service for USA Today readers.
