Infrastructure awards wrap-up: Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel Networks and more

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.
Cellular
–China: Alcatel-Lucent said it won a contract with China Telecom to upgrade the carrier’s CDMA network. The deal is valued at $230 million.
–India: Tata Teleservices has chosen Nokia Siemens Networks for a pan-India GSM network rollout. Nokia Siemens will manage the network it builds for five years, according to the contract.
–Japan: Nortel Networks and Hitachi announced they will work with KDDI to build an LTE network that is expected to be commercially available by the end of 2010. The new network will overlay KDDI’s existing CDMA network.
–Qatar: Nokia Siemens Networks secured a $61 million agreement with Qtel to upgrade the carrier’s 2G and 3G networks.
–Scandinavia: Ericsson said 3 Scandinavia has chosen it to upgrade the carrier’s HSPA network to 21 Mbps downlink speeds.
Wi-Fi
–United States: The Danville, Ind., public school system has chosen Meru Networks to provide an 802.11n wireless network for use by students and staff. The deployment will begin at a new middle school in January and be expanded to other schools as funds allow.
Miscellaneous
–Spain: Nortel Networks said it has been chosen by Spain’s national railway infrastructure company, ADIF, to implement and operate a complete GSM-R radio communications solution for the new Barcelona-Figures high-speed line. The contract is valued at about $27 million.
