Alltel intros additional tiered pricing bundles for data services: Carrier expands number of options from two to five

Alltel Communications L.L.C. announced a tiered approach to its data pricing, with options starting at $10 per month for unlimited mobile Web access.
The carrier – which is in the process of being acquired by Verizon Wireless in a deal expected to close later this year – detailed the five new pricing bundles this morning, a move the carrier said will “give customers control over their monthly bills while allowing them to keep their favorite entertainment and information applications.”
Under Alltel’s new pricing structure, customers with postpaid rate plans of $40 or higher can add unlimited mobile Web access for an extra $10 per month. For $15, customers can get unlimited mobile Web plus unlimited Alltel TV on Demand with seven channels (Alltel Radio Basic, with 10 great channels of commercial free radio) and a subscription to Alltel’s Ringback service. The tiered options top out at $35 per month, which includes everything from each tier as well as unlimited access to Alltel’s Navigation offering, among other services.
Previously, Alltel offered only two pricing options, a $10 per month tier for unlimited data, and a $20 per month offering that included additional services. The carrier’s new bundled tiers essentially increase the number of options from two to five.
Alltel’s new data pricing structure dovetails nicely with similar options from other carriers. For example, AT&T Mobility, the nation’s largest carrier, offers a base data access package for $15 and an expanded offering, for $35, that includes unlimited messaging.
