Despite the likelihood of Alltel Communications L.L.C. falling under the control of Verizon Wireless by year’s end, the nation’s 5th largest carrier has decided to make some quick changes to its network. Alltel announced it will add EV-DO Revision A technology to its offering.
The carrier said the upgrade will allow customers to upload files 10 times faster, and download speeds will also accelerate.
To take advantage of the new Rev. A network, Alltel customers need Rev. A compatible devices such as the Huawei EC228 and UTStarcom UM 150 wireless Internet cards. The HTC PPC6800 and HTC Touch Smartphone can become compatible by visiting a web site and downloading free software.
And aside from offering a faster network, Alltel is going one step further and offering it more people. By the end of the year the carrier expects to reach 82% of its customers with its network; the carrier currently covers 76%.
The news comes shortly after Alltel announced plans to eventually upgrade its network to LTE technology.
