Leap Wireless International Inc. said it will launch its Cricket service in Las Vegas tomorrow using the advanced wireless services spectrum it won during the Federal Communications Commission’s Auction 66 in 2006. Leap has previously launched service using its AWS spectrum in Oklahoma City and southern Texas.
Leap said the network will cover approximately 1,500 square miles and around 2 million potential customers. In addition, Leap said it has “formed relationships with three strategic roaming partners” that will expand the home coverage area to approximately 41,000 square miles. Leap would not name its roaming partners, but did note that roaming would be on 850 MHz and 1.9 GHz networks. (As a not-so-subtle dig at rival MetroPCS Communications Inc., which launched a similar flat-rate service in Las Vegas in late March, Leap noted its network is the “largest local wireless footprint offered by an unlimited wireless service provider in Las Vegas.)
The carrier added that it will have 100 distribution points at launch and that it will offer all of its current calling plans as well as its PC Card-based unlimited data offering.
