Sprint Nextel Corp. is quietly dropping its Voice Command service in July.
The carrier is informing customers via its Web site that it will discontinue the server-based offering, which allows users to dial two buttons then give voice commands to place calls. The service, which is available on any Sprint Nextel CDMA phone, includes a Web-based address book that can be accessed by voice, online and through Sprint 411.
Subscribers who currently use the service are being asked to download and print the address book, which will no longer be accessible after July 1. And users are being encouraged to explore handset-based, voice-activated dialing.
A long-standing option for Sprint Nextel users, Voice Command was offered free to visually impaired users in 2005; the carrier launched a business version of Voice Command in 2003.
Sprint Nextel representatives were not available for comment regarding the move to drop Voice Command.
