Not sure if it’s the desert air or some form of dementia brought on by a lack of food and a surplus of drink, but this year’s CTIA Wireless makes last year’s event seem sort of Mickey Mouse.
A quick stroll of the show floor, which included way too much time in the LG booth checking out the “Iron Man” paraphernalia and new preview for the flick, proved that a quick stroll was not enough time to see much of the floor. My mind might be a little foggy, but this year’s big show seems much biggier than last year’s event in Orlando, Fla.
This is all unscientific as I have no way of actually measuring either the size of the show floor or the number of people in attendance as both would require that black magic art of “math,” but from my unofficial calculations using the much more reporter-friendly Danalgebra, there are 4,439,345 people in attendance and the show floor is 9,745 hectares.
Sure, it could be that the wireless industry has had another year of rebounding from the doldrums that it experienced as a late-teen, but I think it’s safe to say the industry is almost, nearly, just about, right around the corner back to full strength. (And I have the authority to make such a proclamation due to my previously mentioned onset of dementia and the power that provides.)
And I think a main reason for that rebound is that the show returned to its rightful home of Las Vegas. This town was made to host this event. Sure, the rush of people makes trying to get a cab an exercise in patience and endurance, but nearly any other venue pales in comparison as to what Las Vegas can provide.
I know that CTIA has the Spring show scheduled for this lovely venue for the next couple of years, but if the industry’s main trade organization wants to ensure the health and success of the wireless industry, it will book this town for as long as possible.
