iPhone arrives in Austria, Ireland

Add Austria and Ireland to the list of countries in which the iPhone is legitimately available.
The iPhone retail price at T-Mobile Austria, and in Ireland, at O2, will be ?399 ($623) for the 8 GB version and ?499 ($779) for the 16 GB version, the same as in France and Germany. (Click on the links for tariff information.)
T-Mobile in Austria requires a two-year contract; O2 in Ireland requires an 18-month contract.
While the “marquee value” of these new markets may seem underwhelming at first blush, given their size (O2 Ireland has 1.6 million subscribers, T-Mobile Austria has 2 million) and the seeming global ubiquity of unlocked devices from Apple Inc., the iPhone’s list of international markets is expected to grow.
Austria and Ireland join the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States on Apple’s current list of iPhone markets.
Apple has set its sights on 10 million iPhone sales by the end of this year, which would represent roughly 1% of the global market — a benchmark that is being closely watched by analysts, as the vendor attempts to convert mindshare to market share.
