Alltel Wireless unveiled a location-based roaming feature that allows subscribers to use GPS applications outside their home network area.
The move allows subscribers to use location-based applications in more than 45 major metropolitan areas thanks to new “network enhancements.” Alltel used the opportunity to push GPS applications including TeleNav GPS Navigator, Alltel Navigation, Axcess Family Finder and TimecardGPS, an enterprise-focused offering.
Standard roaming charges will apply, Alltel noted.
“Through LBS Nationwide Roaming, our customers are able to use a GPS application when it matters most, especially when they are in unfamiliar territory,” said Kristi Crum, Alltel’s director of multimedia content.
Alltel is one of a number of carriers pushing their location-services offerings in an attempt to pull additional revenues from voice-only customers.
