Regional wireless carrier Cellular South said it will roll out an m-commerce initiative early next year across all its markets following a successful three-month trial of mobile transaction technology.
The carrier, which offers service in four southeastern states, partnered with Bank of America and others to evaluate point-of-purchase transaction technology in Memphis, Tenn., and Jackson, Miss. More than 75 customers used the offering, dubbed WirelessWallet, at retail locations using Kyocera Wireless Corp. handsets and MasterCard’s PayPass system.
A post-trial poll revealed 87% of users would be interested in participating in a full deployment, Cellular South reported.
While similar trials have been held in numerous U.S. cities, most major American operators have yet to roll out m-commerce services commercially.
