Alvarion, Hitachi partner on mobile WiMAX in Japan

Alvarion Ltd. and Hitachi Communication Technologies Ltd. have partnered to develop a mobile WiMAX network in Japan using spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band.
Israel-based Alvarion said it will develop base stations and the mobile management technology needed to seamlessly handoff between base stations while Tokyo-based Hitachi will be responsible for developing the mobile gateway technology, and construction and maintenance of the system.
For the network, Hitachi will develop ASN-GW, which can be expanded as traffic increases and auto configure to the quality of the carrier network by switching to a redundant system without impacting base stations. The system will also boast high-speed packet processing performance, which is expected to be at least tenfold the performance of current Hitachi products, according to the company.
Alvarion’s base stations will feature a reduction in size and installation costs, be compatible with key features of the WiMAX Forum Wave 2 specifications and pull low power consumption.
Alvarion has played a leading role in the WiMAX Forum from the early stages and Hitachi plans to expand it next generation broadband wireless business globally through a similar scheme.
