YouTube Inc. quietly launched a stripped-down, mobile version of its popular video-sharing site.
The wireless offering, available at m.youtube.com, offers a small selection of streaming videos in a handful of categories such as “Featured,” “Recently Added” and “Top Rated.” The service marks the conclusion of YouTube’s exclusive agreement with Verizon Wireless.
YouTube apparently downscales the resolution of video files for mobile consumption, but the company warns users to check their data plans before viewing the clips. The offering is available on feature phones as well as high-end devices, although some users have had difficulty playing the videos.
“YouTube Mobile is a data intensive application,” the company exclaims on the home page. “We highly recommend that you upgrade to an unlimited data plan with your mobile service provider to avoid additional charges.”
