Global VoIP over Wi-Fi equipment will drive $82 billion in revenue by 2012, according to Juniper Research, which projects that dual-mode handsets-cellular and Wi-Fi-will dominate that market.
North America will account for nearly half the projected revenue, Juniper forecast.
“The handset market is moving to a stage where no one wants to carry two or three devices in their pocket,” said Basharat Hamid Ashai, author of Juniper’s report. “So the ability to have a single device for all calls is a compelling proposition.”
Ashai forecasts that while dual-mode handsets will capture $68 billion in revenue over five years, single-mode VoIP over Wi-Fi handsets will see much more modest uptake-accounting for perhaps $1.5 billion in revenue by 2012-due to high pricing.
“Most single-mode, VoIP over Wi-Fi handset manufacturers are actively either designing or planning to ship dual-mode phones,” Ashai said.
The Juniper report forecasts that North America will lead the market by driving about $35 billion in revenue, followed by EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) with $23 billion and the Asia-Pacific region with $21 billion.
