Wi-Fi chip market to top 1B by 2008

The Wi-Fi semiconductor market reached nearly 200 million units shipped last year, according to new figures from ABI Research.
The industry has sold more than 500 million chipsets cumulatively. The study predicts the industry will surpass the 1 billion mark for cumulative chipset shipments by mid-2008.
“Cumulative shipments of 1 billion Wi-Fi ICs mark a significant milestone,” said Philip Solis, principal analyst at the company. “But even more impressive, there will be well over a billion chipsets shipped in 2012 alone, with cellular handsets and consumer electronics accounting for over two-thirds of that total.
“From our point of view, cellular handsets and consumer electronics were always the most important end products for Wi-Fi chipset vendors to focus on,” said Solis. “With more than two-thirds of Wi-Fi chipsets going into these two product categories in 2012, it is critical for chipset vendors to secure the appropriate … wins in order to sustain or grow market share.”
