Study: Moto Q interests online surfers

BOSTON—Motorola Inc.’s Q phone garnered significant interest from online handset shoppers during the first month it was released, according to an analysis by Compete Inc., which studies the behavior of online shoppers.

More than 5 percent of those researching handset purchases evaluated the Q, making it the most considered handset in its price range last month. The Q currently is offered exclusively through Verizon Wireless for $200. The Q likely benefited from heavy online advertising from Verizon Wireless.

Palm Inc.’s Treo 650 was considered by about 2.3 percent of shoppers in June, and 2.1 percent of handset shoppers considered the Treo 700 series, according to Compete.

Shoppers often compared the Q phone with devices like the Danger Inc. Sidekick II, MDA and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.’s T509 rather than e-mail focused handsets like the Treo or Research In Motion Ltd.’s Blackberry products, said Compete.
