ROK snatches content developer Fonedream

ALBRIGHTON, United Kingdom—Mobile software developer ROK Media Ltd. said it has acquired U.K.-based content developer Fonedream.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

ROK’s offerings include a “place-shifting” device that allows users to watch their home TV broadcasts over mobile devices. The company said it is developing Voice over Internet Protocol and mobile IPTV technologies as well as new text messaging applications.

Fonedream offers ringtones and other content and boasts distribution agreements with VeriSign Inc.’s Jamster and AOL Inc., as well as carriers Virgin Mobile, Orange and Vodafone Group plc.

“We’d been looking to work with a larger mobile technology innovator for some time and had been watching ROK with increasing admiration over the last couple of years,” said Fonedream founder Graham Baines, who will continue to oversee the operation. “We have found what we believe to be the perfect fit—a company who understands and can implement original IP in content services and delivery on a global scale.”
