LONDON, England—Britain’s Office of Communications has announced the winners of 6.6 megahertz of technology-neutral spectrum to be used for low-power GSM wireless services such as private networks. The Wireless Telegraphy licenses cover spectrum in the 1781.7-1785 MHz and 1876.7-1880 MHz paired bands.

The dozen provisional winners include: British Telecommunications plc, Cable & Wireless UK, Colt Mobile Telecommunications Ltd., Cyberpress Ltd., FMS Solutions Ltd., Mapesbury Communications Ltd., O2 (UK) Ltd., PLDT (UK) Ltd., Shyam Telecom UK Ltd., Sprint Mobile AB, and Teleware plc. Final awarding of the licenses depends upon the full payment of related fees and should be made by the end of today.

According to Zynetix Ltd., a U.K. developer and manufacturer of GSM soft switches, possible uses for the spectrum include providing wireless service for hospitals and government offices, college campuses, GSM hot spots, and data infill for mobile networks.
